A private residential stairwell in Tustin, Orange County, finished in hand-applied Venetian plaster worked to a travertine effect in a warm coffee tone. Over three working days, SBK Group turned plain stairwell walls into a soft, stone-like surface with real depth and movement - a quiet, architectural presence that sits naturally beside the home's wood treads and integrated step lighting.

The stairwell was already a real architectural feature in the home, with strong lines and warm wood steps, but its wall surfaces felt too plain for the design language around them. The client wanted to elevate this everyday transition between levels and give it a more finished, considered feel. Because a stairwell is experienced both up close and in motion, the new surface needed to do more than add color - it had to bring texture, depth, and a sense of permanence while staying calm and appropriate for the home.

After reviewing several finish directions together, the choice was Venetian plaster in the Marmorino family, worked to a travertine effect. It was the right fit because it adds quiet movement and a mineral, stone-like character without overwhelming the architecture or turning glossy. A warm coffee tone kept the result soft and elegant and tied the walls to the wood treads. As always, the final color, sheen, and movement were confirmed on a live, hand-applied on-site sample, reviewed in the stairwell's own light before any work began.

The work began with careful protection of the surrounding walls, edges, and stair components, and the glass railings were removed so the full wall could be reached. The surfaces were then primed with a quartz-based bonding primer to create a stable foundation for the plaster. On the first day, that preparation was completed and the first coat went on, establishing the base layer across the stairwell wall.

On the second day, the second coat was applied and the travertine effect was developed by hand. This is the stage that gives the finish its identity - soft mineral variation, layered depth, and the gentle movement of a travertine-inspired Venetian plaster surface, built up trowel pass by trowel pass rather than rolled on as a single flat color.

On the third day, the surface was refined through sanding and detailing, with transitions and small imperfections corrected. A protective sealer was then applied to complete the finish and protect the surface while keeping its natural, matte character. The project closed with final cleanup and handoff.

The finished stairwell now has a far more intentional, architectural presence. Across roughly 160 sq ft, the Venetian plaster gives the walls a quiet, stone-like depth that shifts softly with the light and adds richness without heaviness. The warm coffee tone works naturally with the wood treads, so the stairwell feels warmer and more cohesive - a plain transition between levels turned into a finished design feature. The client approved the completed work and was pleased with the result.
