Marmorino Tintoretto Fireplace in Carlsbad | SBK Group

A painted brick fireplace in a Carlsbad living room, in North County San Diego, was rebuilt as a smooth architectural feature and finished by hand in Marmorino Tintoretto, MC-709 Pure White. The six-day renovation replaced a heavily patterned brick face and an overhanging raised hearth with one calm, continuous mineral surface, paired with a floating wood mantel for a cleaner, more contemporary focal point.

The client wanted to modernize the fireplace without a finish that felt overly decorative or disconnected from the room. Decorative wall finishes were new to her, so the selection focused on clear explanation, physical samples, and a visual preview before work began. Several colors were reviewed on hand-applied samples, and MC-709 Pure White was chosen for its quiet relationship with the surrounding white walls, light flooring, black firebox, and natural wood mantel.

Why Marmorino Tintoretto

Within the Venetian plaster family, Marmorino Tintoretto reads as a matte, hand-applied surface with subtle trowel variation rather than a glossy or heavily patterned finish. In Pure White it keeps the fireplace visually light while giving the surface a depth that flat paint would not provide. SBK Group used Meoded Marmorino Tintoretto, and the physical sample confirmed the color and texture in the actual room light before installation, while a render of the fireplace with its mantel settled the composition in advance.

A six-day renovation

Because the project took place in an occupied home, the work area and adjacent circulation paths were protected before construction began. The existing painted brick was retained as the underlying masonry, then reshaped through framing, drywall, and surface preparation. A concealed steel cleat for the wood mantel was coordinated with the masonry before finishing, so the completed surface would not need to be drilled afterward.

The entire fireplace feature was treated as one composition. The chimney breast, returns, and raised hearth were leveled and prepared so the plaster could move continuously across the rebuilt form, with the overhanging front lip of the old hearth removed to lighten the mass.

Once the surface was primed and sanded, the first coat of Meoded Marmorino Tintoretto established the tonal movement, and a final coat refined it. The project closed with detailing at the edges and transitions, a protective sealer, and the wood mantel mounted after the finish had cured. At the end of each workday, the areas of the home affected by the renovation were cleaned and vacuumed before the crew left.

The result

The former brick fireplace now reads as a single architectural element rather than a collection of masonry courses and joints. Pure White keeps the mass visually quiet, while the hand-applied Marmorino introduces subtle mineral movement that changes gently with the natural light. The floating wood mantel adds warmth and a clear horizontal line without visible support hardware, and together the white mineral surface, black firebox, and natural wood create a simpler, more contemporary focal point for the living room.
